2001-04-18 It's garbage day tomorrow! Yay! You know why that's exciting? Because our recycling box, which hasn't been collecting for two whole weeks now and has enough stuff to fill an extra large garbage bag, might actually be emptied tomorrow! Yes, those evil garbage collectors decided to give us grief by neglecting to empty our recycling box for the past two weeks so at this point, we had a landfill of cans and miscellaneous paper sitting on our living room counter. I don't see why they targetted us since we live on a street full of people who also don't separate the metals from the plastics from the paper. Anyway, we decided to sort everything tonight, in hopes that they'll whisk our recycling goodies off to a better place in the morning. So there we were, in our foyer, picking through our garbage: old newspapers, sticky soup cans, and cartons of juice and milk. Cheryl wanted to make all the boxes flatter so we could fit more into our blue box. She took an old milk carton and opened the little knob so she could squish it down. "Whoa, it really smells," she said as she wrinkled her nose and held the box an arm's length away from herself. "I don't smell anything," I said. Prematurely. Because at this point, she became so overwhelmed by the stench that she decided to open the front door. A big gust of wind came in and blew that sour milk odour right into the foyer. Just so you know, the reeking stench of two-week-old fermenting milk is very, very unpleasant. It's like a mix of really sweaty socks and regurgitated baby formula. So after being almost knocked over by the milk odour, we decided to finish sorting outside. I love Kingston! |
