2003-06-25 On the weekend, I had to work half days because my preceptor was doing hospitalist work for the entire week (and actually be on call 24/7, but luckily that doesn't concern me). It was good though because I got to see two deliveries. I almost cried at the first one because the baby was crying, the mother was crying, and the father was crying. It was quite beautiful, even though the baby looked a bit odd since he had a conehead due to forceps and an extra tennis ball-shaped lump on the side of his head due to the vacuum. When I saw the obstetrician cut the mother's perineum during the episiotomy to enlarge the opening for the baby, I almost passed out from sympathy pains. And after seeing the women cry bloody hell and swear at everyone in the delivery room, I am beginning to think that I never want to give birth naturally. Just put me to sleep, cut me open, and take the thing out. Since it was boiling hot over the weekend, I managed to sneak some fun activities in. The other students and I went to the local beach on Saturday and tanned. On Sunday, we were invited to one of the doctors' cottages for a party. It was on a leech-filled lake, but I went in the water anyway because it was too hot to stay dry. Also schmoozed with some of the docs and their families (all young with clumps of little kids running around) and had some good food (shrimp! bbq beef! spinach and strawbery salad! fresh fruit meringue! all free!). Then at night, we went over to another doctor's house for pool and Scrabble. After all that, I can't believe it's my last day of work tomorrow. Then on Friday, I'm going back to good old T.O., with its SARS and Rolling Stones controversy and smog galore. I am quite excited to be going home since it will be one day closer to leaving for Europe, but I will be sad to leave this place. Timmins has been very good to me. |
